It was originally design as a mobile ground to space weapons system with a gun strong enough to take out even an Alareen battle cruiser. During the Earth vs. Alareen war it was discovered if you brought the man gun down a little it was just as effective at taking out Alareen ground targets and air craft just as well as it was at taking out low orbiting space ships, if not better.
